For as long as she could remember, KiAnna Nycole longed to discover characters in literature and on TV that mirrored her experience of coping with food allergies in her own life. Despite this, she had the impression that she was the only child coping with these difficulties because there was no representation of her situation. As a result, she decided to put her knowledge to use by publishing Food Friendly, a book for children that emphasizes the significance of being aware of and including people who have food allergies.
In her research, KiAnna discovered that many children and parents are unaware of the severity of food allergies and the community’s requirements. Characterizations of food allergies in the media frequently contribute to the perpetuation of damaging misunderstandings, which further isolate those who are allergic to food. As a result, Kianna wrote the book and established a more significant movement known as The Food Friendly Project.
Through storytelling, webinars, curricula, and other means, the Food Friendly Project seeks to foster allyship and raise awareness of food allergies among educators, parents, and children. The first step in accomplishing this aim and educating youngsters about the acceptance and inclusion of people with food allergies is the publication of this children’s book.
Kianna, who has just recently completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Film Production, is particularly committed to expanding the number of chances available to those who are members of minority groups and those who have impairments in the entertainment sector. She thinks sharing stories is a means of bringing about change, educating people, and developing empathy, and she intends Food Friendly to do all of these things.
Within the first month after its publication, Food Friendly has sold more than one hundred copies, indicating that audiences have positively welcomed it. Towards the production of the book, KiAnna was awarded a grant from the Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), and she collaborated with the Food Allergy Research and Education non-profit organization (FARE) to create pictures for the book.
“My long-term goal is to continue to make stories that cause people to think and build compassion and have a message,” KiAnna said in an interview with The Miami Hurricane. “It is precisely that which will bring me joy.”
There are two online retailers, Barnes & Noble and Amazon, where you can purchase her book, Food Friendly.
